What is a Counselor Position Like / Why Do It?

What is the counselor position at Lake Greeley Camp?

Counselors can hold many different kinds of jobs and positions depending upon the summer camp they decide to spend their summers with. We would like to take the opportunity to describe what you would expect as part of our counselor staff and why you should consider taking the plunge with being a counselor at Lake Greeley Camp.

Counselor Roles - In Cabin and Instructor

The counselors at Lake Greeley Camp have a duel role in that you would be living in a cabin with a cabin group of campers from one of our divisions and you will also be instructing at one of our activity sites during the periods throughout the day.

Orientation and Expectations

We understand that coming into a summer camp environment can be extremely fun and exciting, but it also can be quite daunting if you've never been away from home, are from another country and entering the United States for the first time, or entering this position as your first job that you've had. Throughout all these circumstances, we welcome you into our team for the summer and want to see you thrive along with the other counselors and campers during your time at camp.

Understand, however, that a job at summer camp is not necessarily all fun and games. You have a tremendous responsibility with looking after children in an open environment while in the cabin and at activity sites.

To address this expectation of responsibility and how we would like you to fulfill that responsibilty, we have a week long orientation before camp begins where we address all sorts of issues, concerns, and questions that counselors will have at camp. Whether it be how to address homesickness, how to instruct an activity, how to manage a cabin of campers at a meal or at the evening activity, these are just some conversations we have with the counselors each year to get you up to speed on what you can encounter as a counselor.

Don't forget that we want you to have a great, amazing, fun summer because that fun translates to the campers who will then have an amazing summer as well getting to know you and becoming more involved in the camp environment.

Being a counselor at camp will prepare you for almost any job, any interaction, any difficulty you might face in the working world. This is your chance to become so well-rounded as a candidate in another profession that your recruiter will be all too happy to accept you into an organization. Not to mention there is always the chance that your recruiter spent a summer at camp, too.
